James Harden, the reigning NBA MVP, is confident his Houston Rockets can dethrone the back-to-back champions.

The quest to prevent the Golden State Warriors from winning their third NBA title in a row begins on Sunday at Oracle Arena in Oakland.

The Rockets have been itching to play the Warriors in the playoffs this season after Golden State bounced them in seven games in the Western Conference finals last season. When asked about the opportunity, Harden talked confidently about his squad.

“We’re a very confident group of guys. We’ve been that way the entire year,” Harden told reporters on Saturday. “We’re more than capable. We’re excited about the opportunity. We know the difficulties and the challenges that are going to come along that way, but we’re prepared for them.”

Harden explained that “every possession, every game” will be a chance to win, and that the Rockets will have to take advantage of that. But Harden said he also knows how “difficult” that will be.

The Rockets are healthy, happy and rolling, full of momentum after bouncing the Utah Jazz in the first round in five games.

On the best roll of his career, James Harden has returned his name to the conversations about MVP. That includes his own willingness to openly seek the honor for a second-consecutive season.

Asked if he is “hungry” to win the award again, Harden said, “I need it. I need it for sure. And I’m going to get it.

“Individually, I got to bring it every night and make sure the guys around me in that locker room are on the same level,” Harden said. “It’s a great feeling. Individually, I got to make sure I’m on my A game every night, and that’s not just scoring. That’s being a leader every night. That’s making sure I’m communicating with my guys and we’re putting ourselves in positions to win games.”

Harden has scored at least 30 points in 10-consecutive games, averaging 40.8 points per game in that stretch, and at least 40 points in his past four games. His streak of eight-consecutive games with at least 35 points and five assists in the longest in NBA history.
