Richard Sherman to meet with 49ers officials on Saturday

The 49ers need cornerback help, and Richard Sherman certainly brings knowledge of the defense.

The free agency negotiation period begins on Monday, but the Seattle decision to release Richard Sherman on Friday means he can begin negotiating with teams immediately. And it appears he is starting with the San Francisco 49ers.

Reports are out Sherman has received preliminary interest from the 49ers, Titans, Lions, Raiders, Texans, Bears, Buccaneers, and Packers.

Sherman tore his Achilles on November 9. The timing would potentially have him ready in time for the start of training camp, although given his age, the 49ers (or any other team) might be inclined to bring him along slowly. An Achilles tear can be a brutal injury, and his age will be something to factor in as he recovers from the injury. Michael Crabtree bounced back from his Achilles tear, but it took some time. NaVorro Bowman returned to action from his, but he appeared a step slower and was eventually released by the 49ers.

The 49ers have a big need at cornerback. Sherman has the experience in Robert Saleh’s style of defense, and of course brings some serious swagger to the table. Some are already questioning any decision to bring him on board, but given that this would be a short term deal, it is worth looking into. I would not expect significant guarantees in any contract offer, so why not take a look?
